GTA IV: A Search of an American Dream

Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA4), is a sandbox-style action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North. It is the sixth 3D game in the Grand Theft Auto series, the sixth console release, and the eleventh game overall. The game was preceded by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a war veteran, who comes to the United States in search of the American Dream, but quickly becomes entangled in a seedy underworld of gangs, crime, and corruption.

Grand Theft Auto IV's gameplay is similar to previous games, in which your job is to drive cars, and then steal things, kill people, rob stores, etc. There are very few if ANY missions not connected to the main story for your respective character. There are 2 quest types in GTA IV, the main kind which usually have a chain, and the bonus ones which are one shooters, and build on the core character of Nicolie.

Any GTA player knows, you're going to take and deliver damage. For the first time you actually have a health meter for your targets. This doesn't mean shooting them insures they're dead, but if they do get up, odds are they'll be running from you and not shooting at you.

One of the realism qualities the game lacked for a while came to cars and shoot outs. How many times did you hit a tire ONCE and it's flat as a pancake? Or how about if you just nick a windshield and the other guy dies? Who can forget shooting the trunk and the car explodes? All of these problems are corrected in GTA IV. It takes time for the tire to go flat, you see blood and the car go off course to confirm a kill, and you'd better shoot the engine or that car isn't going to explode. To top it off, it's possible for your car to take enough NONE explosive damage to merely stall and die.

GTA4 graphics and sound are cudding edge, a whole new damage system that is actually more realistic, and this game takes place in a city that is iconic to humanity. The system requirements are high, and the multiplayer isn't perfect. The replay value is also a bit limited due to the realistic story.

The future of GTA IV is clear. It's more than just steal car, shoot, run from cops. It's become a real cultural piece that includes great interactive games and activities and has high potential to become even more expansive by possibly featuring more indoor locations, upgradable apartments or custom pad designing, hiring backup for tough missions, custom character creation or have the next main character be Puerto Rican or Asian since they have gone through white, Italian, and African American already, and possibly even feature multiple cities in which you can travel to by highway, subway, or take a flight to get to. That would increase mission potential greatly and expand the depth of the user experience greatly. While these additions might not be around the corner, I think it's safe to say that with the direction video games are going in the past couple of years alone, and seeing what's coming out soon this year, Rockstar will definitely release another great title with Grand Theft Auto V.
