Call of Duty: Black Ops

Gameplay in the online multiplayer mode. The w...Image via WikipediaThe biggest first-person action series of all time and the follow-up to last year's blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 returns with Call of Duty: Black Ops (aka Black Ops). Black Ops will take you behind enemy lines as a member of an elite special forces unit engaging in covert warfare, classified operations, and explosive conflicts across the globe.Your actions will tip the balance during the most dangerous time period mankind has ever known, with access to exclusive weaponry and equipment.

Black Ops is a first-person shooter. The player assumes the role of a foot soldier who can wield various firearms, of which two at a time can be carried; throw grenades  and other explosives; and use other equipment as weapons. A player close enough to an enemy can kill with one blow. A character can take three stances: standing, crouching, or prone; each affects rate of movement, accuracy, and stealth. The player can dive prone from a standing position when running. The player can momentarily sprint but will then grow tired. The screen glows red to indicate damage to a player's health, which goes away over time. When the character is within the blast radius of a live grenade, a marker indicates the direction of the grenade, helping the player to flee or throw it back. Among the game's weapons are crossbows with bolts and explosive ammunition, Dragon's Breath rounds and ballistic knives.

Resident Evil 5: Bioterrorism

Resident Evil 5Image via Wikipedia

The biohazard threat is not over just yet, a new terror to send shivers down players' spines. Our Resident Evil hero, Chris Redfield has followed the path of the evil literally around the globe. After joining a new organization, Chris heads to Africa where the latest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people and animals of the city into mindless, maddened creatures. Her new partner, Sheva Alomar, who lends her strength, intelligence and sharp-shooting skills to the mission. In order to survive, Chris and Sheva must work together to take on the challenges of discovering the truth behind this evil plot. Utilizing a revolutionary new 2-player co-op mode of gameplay, players assume control of either Chris or Sheva and experience Resident Evil in new ways. In Resident Evil 5, Capcom has players fearing the daylight as much as they have feared shadow in previous games.

Resident Evil 5 (RE5) is a third person action game. While the franchise's roots are embedded in the horror genre, you will find little to no horror elements in this game.

RE5 puts a heavy emphasis on combat and teamwork. You will travel around with a buddy, blasting your way through hordes of genetic mutations while looting ammo, weapons, and countless treasures.

A staple of RE games is the puzzle solving element, which usually involves a fair amount of backtracking. As this implies, in other RE games you'll have a fair amount of free roam throughout the game world. RE5, however, discards all puzzle solving elements and puts you on a linear path of death and destruction.

Along your path of death and destruction you can do a variety of actions, ranging from jumping through windows to climbing ladders and pushing them down behind you in order to impede enemy movement. From time to time, you'll have to perform partner actions in order to reach otherwise unreachable areas, where you'll often find either good loot or the solution for progressing further through the game.

Loot is generally found in the form of ammo. Ammo comes in a limited supply, which means you'll usually feel like you don't have much. It seems as if this was done so you can't run around and murder everything carelessly. While such limited ammo provides a minor amount of tension, it's nothing like RE1 where you can often be running around without any bullets. In this respect, you may be forced to use your knife from time to time, which is not a great thing since your 'elite' operatives are unable to efficiently neutralize enemies in such a fashion. Ammo types are basic, allowing any fully automatic weapon to use machinegun rounds, any pistol to use pistol ammo, and so on and so forth.

Other loot consists of money, weapons, healing items, and treasures. Money is used to purchase things between missions. While you can buy weapons and first aid spray, you won't be able to buy ammo. You can also spend your money on improving your weapons, investing in either firepower, reload speed, clip capacity, and a few other things. Weapons you can loot range from pistols to sniper rifles, and each type of weapon has something like a handful of options. Healing items come as either first aid spray, or the classic RE herbs that can be combined in a variety of ways to provide varying amounts of health recovery. Treasures can be sold for money, and are found in a wide variety of places.

As far as combat goes it's fairly basic, but the catch here is that you'll have to watch your buddy's back and help them in various ways. When you are grabbed by a zombie, for example, your buddy will have to either press the help button or shoot the enemy off of you. Likewise, if your health is knocked down far enough you will go into the 'dying state,' in which case you will move like a sloth and your buddy will have to again press the help button or heal you with their healing items. While this may sound very basic, enemy types, the sheer quantity of enemies, a limited inventory space, and scripted events can make staying alive somewhat troublesome. To boot, both players will get a game over if only one of them dies. So yes, this is the perfect two-player game if you want to play cooperatively.

A few various combat mechanics that spice things up are the ability to melee attack wounded enemies (doing so while they've been knocked over will additionally kill them), vastly increase damage with headshots, and use the environment (or grenade variations) to disrupt your enemy's mobility.

Boss battles are pretty standard. Many bosses you'll have to damage in a specific way, while others you just have to evade and shoot the hell out of. Most bosses have a small variety of attacks to evade, but on the proper difficulty setting can provide highly challenging. Don't expect anything too fancy in this department.

Once you complete the game you'll unlock the mercenaries mode. This mode will allow you to pick from a variety of maps and pre-set kit setups to play in a sort of survival meets time trial mode. Additional maps and kits are unlocked as you play it more. Mercenaries mode has a lot of appeal to the bloodthirsty psychopaths, as you'll be able to kill enemies in massive quantities with a highly limited amount of equipment, with absolutely no puzzle solving or map progression.
